Replacement clues
Take a word and swap one letter for another. The clue tells you which letter to change (first, last or middle) and gives you the new letter, usually as an abbreviation.
How to spot one
- Look for 'replaced', 'changed', 'swapped' or 'for'.
- 'Headed', 'leader' or 'at the helm' refer to the first letter.
- 'End', 'point' or 'tail' refer to the last letter; 'heart' means the middle.
- The new letter is usually an abbreviation such as B for bishop or K for king.

- Hot replaces cold in cold grip (4)
- Plot changing time to year is a ruse (4)
- Bishop replaces mother's head — trouble! (6)
- Wide loaf, its heart replaced by ring (5)
- Friend with right in place of left is average (3)
- Clothier, with son taking over at the helm, becomes seaman (6)
